Priapus, Bara Manga and Mentaiko Itto's Comedy: Volumes 1-6 Review

If you're a fan of Bara Manga you've definitely heard of Mentaiko Itto. And if you've heard of Mentaiko Itto then you know Priapus. Let's jump into Priapus Volumes 1–6, a chaotic, unapologetically raunchy series that takes the concept of divine intervention to a level Zeus himself might blush at—if he weren’t already the one pulling the strings.

When Zeus Goes Off the Rails (Priapus Series Volume 1)

Priapus Volume 1 Cover Bara Manga by Mentaiko Itto.

Zeus, fed up with humanity being the worst, decides to hit the reset button on mankind—not with fire, brimstone, or a flood. Nope, this time, he’s playing it classy. His plan? Convert all men into raging gays and effectively snip humanity’s reproductive pipeline. Enter Priapus, the fertility god with a… package so persuasive it’d make Michelangelo’s David weep.

From the opening panels, it’s clear this isn’t your average god-versus-mankind epic. Priapus doesn’t just turn heads; he leaves his targets dazed, confused, and reconsidering their life choices. With art that masterfully conveys every jaw-drop and eyebrow-raise, this first installment sets the tone with a perfect mix of hilarity, explicit charm, and a storyline that makes you ask, “Who comes up with this stuff?”

Oh, and the sound effects? Hand-drawn and localized to perfection. You’ll never look at the word "throb" the same way again.

Cops, Carnage, and… Oops? (Priapus Series Volume 2)

Priapus Volume 2 Cover Bara Manga by Mentaiko Itto.

By the second volume, Priapus is already waist-deep in his holy mission. And by waist-deep, I mean he’s literally stopped traffic with his antics—resulting in one hell of an awkward run-in with the law. Enter Officer Honda, who, despite his best attempts at law and order, finds himself face-to-face (or, well, crotch-to-crotch) with Priapus’ “divine charm.”

The sequence that follows could best be described as hot mess energy on steroids. Watching Priapus navigate his way out of a jail cell by turning Honda into an enthusiastic convert is a level of audacity that’s as hysterical as it is X-rated. Let’s just say Priapus knows how to “smooth” things over in ways that would make HR departments everywhere combust.

Delivering Packages of a Different Kind (Priapus Series Volume 3)

Who knew Priapus could make a decent deliveryman? Apparently, he’s not just good with his… otherworldly equipment. His stint as a part-time courier leads to some rather revealing situations when his workplace turns into a carnival of chaos. His boss, Momoe, suspects something’s off, especially when Priapus’ colleagues start acting like they’ve just walked off the set of an adult film.

Momoe’s repressed frustrations take center stage in this volume, delivering a cocktail of hilarity and steamy tension. Every panel feels like a ticking time bomb of “will he, won’t he?”—and trust me, Priapus always delivers. Literally. His job’s about packages, after all.

Gangsters and Group Exercises (Priapus Series Volume 4)

Priapus Volume 4 Cover Bara Manga by Mentaiko Itto.

Volume 4 introduces Jingi, a young, brooding yakuza boss who’s got 99 problems—and his goons’ reckless behavior is definitely one. That is, until Priapus walks into his life and offers him some… team-building exercises. What kind of exercises, you ask? Well, let’s just say they don’t involve trust falls or HR-approved icebreakers.

Watching Jingi’s transition from skeptical gangster to enthusiastic participant in Priapus’ “activities” is both side-splittingly funny and downright filthy. The group sessions? Let’s just say they’ll redefine your idea of “gang bonding.”

Monks, Swords, and a Questionable Dry Spell (Priapus Series Volume 5)

Priapus Volume 5 Cover Bara Manga by Mentaiko Itto.

In Volume 5, Priapus trades the city chaos for the countryside, targeting Kengo, a kendo enthusiast, and Goki, a monk with abs so chiseled they could be classified as a religious artifact. But here’s the kicker: neither of them seems to fall for Priapus’ godly allure. Shocking, right? Is our boy losing his edge, or is there some cosmic shenanigans at play?

The humor here ramps up as Priapus faces rejection—yes, even gods get ghosted, apparently. Watching him try and fail repeatedly while delivering his usual over-the-top antics is an absolute riot. And the monk’s deadpan reactions? Comedy gold.

The Sun God’s Hotter, Brattier Son (Priapus Series Volume 6)

Priapus Volume 6 Cover Bara Manga by Mentaiko Itto.

As if Priapus didn’t have enough to deal with, in strolls Apollo, Zeus’ spoiled brat of a son with the temper of a frat boy denied his keg stand. Apollo’s in town, and Priapus is forced to babysit the sun god while trying to avoid him literally burning Japan to a crisp. And let’s be real, Apollo’s ego makes him a pain in the ass—figuratively and, given the series’ track record, probably literally too.

Watching Priapus juggle his divine mission while keeping Apollo entertained leads to some of the series’ funniest moments. From steamy misunderstandings to explosive tantrums, Volume 6 dials up the chaos to 11. And, of course, it’s not a Priapus installment without an outrageous amount of skin.

Final Thoughts on the Priapus Series...So Far

Priapus is unapologetically bold, ridiculously funny, and wildly explicit. It’s a series that knows exactly what it’s about and doesn’t shy away from being as outrageous as possible. Each volume pushes the envelope, combining clever writing with art that captures every over-the-top moment in glorious detail.

Whether it’s Priapus’ larger-than-life “charisma” or the absurd predicaments he finds himself in, this series isn’t just a read—it’s an experience. And with each volume, the laughs, gasps, and oh-my-god moments only get bigger. If you’re ready to embrace the madness, Priapus has plenty to offer—and trust me, he never leaves anyone unsatisfied.
